Detailed Sahara Desert Trip

Day 1: Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Todra Gorge → Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)

Depart in the morning from your hotel or riad in Marrakech and head toward the Dades Valley via the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of winding mountain roads and traditional Berber villages built from mud brick.
Continue through the Ounila Valley to visit the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a former caravan stop between Marrakech and Ouarzazate. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fortified village sits on a hilltop overlooking palm groves and desert plains. After time to explore and enjoy a mint tea break, continue east through Skoura and the Valley of Roses.
In Tinghir, stop to admire the Todra Oasis before exploring the dramatic Todra Gorge, with its towering canyon walls. Continue to Erfoud, known for its dates and fossil workshops, where the landscape gradually transforms into desert. Arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Switch to camels and trek across the dunes at sunset to reach your desert camp. Enjoy dinner under the stars followed by traditional Berber music around the campfire.

Day 2: Erg Chebbi → Ziz Oasis → Middle Atlas → Fez

Wake up early to climb a nearby dune and watch the sunrise over the vast Erg Chebbi sand sea—one of the most memorable experiences in the Sahara. After breakfast at the camp, depart Merzouga and head toward Rissani to visit the local livestock market and explore the ruins of ancient Sijilmassa.
Continue north through the Ziz Palm Oasis, stopping to admire sweeping views of date palms and river valleys. Drive through Berber villages and the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing cedar and oak forests near Azrou and the alpine-style town of Ifrane, often called “the Switzerland of Morocco.”
After a stop in Midelt, continue to Fez, Morocco’s oldest imperial city and cultural capital. Arrival marks the end of your Sahara Desert tour, leaving you with lasting memories of an unforgettable journey from Marrakech to Fez.
